As a small, outward-oriented country, Liechtenstein relies on stable and predictable international rules. This is particularly true as regards economic relationships.
For this reason, Liechtenstein is a member of important international or multilateral organizations and treaties:
- 1950: Liechtenstein adopted the Statute of the International Court of Justice
- 1975: Liechtenstein endorsed the final act of the Helsinki Accords (now OSCE)
- 1978: Liechtenstein joined the Council of Europe
- 1990: Liechtenstein was admitted to the United Nations (UN)
- 1991: Liechtenstein joined the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) as a full member
- 1995: Liechtenstein became a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) and of the World Trade Organization (WTO)
